There are always a variety of photographs that highlight some of the events of the year for me. Some images are humorous, some completely superficial, whilst others are breathtaking, picturesque, serious, violent, and even terrifying.

Boobs and Guns

Let’s start with the humorous – the spoof picture of gun-toting beauty queen, Sarah Palin. The manipulated image, showing Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin posing for a photo sporting an American flag bikini and a rifle became an instant hit when forwarded by millions via email and suitably ridiculed her position within the US Elections.

Ice Cold Vodka

This picture that sends shivers down my spine. Even though it was published on the front cover of Times Magazine in December 2007, for some reason this portrait of Vladimir Putin has haunted me throughout 2008…

Perverse Pop Culture

I chose this image not because I actually like it, but because of the reactions it caused. I find modern pop culture perverse enough as it is, but I enjoy the typical contentious approach that Annie Leibovitz takes whilst photographing celebrities – especially when they result in a global (actually mainly U.S) uproar of innocent half naked Disney star, Miley Cyrus.

Flames of Hate

I was part of the team that produced The Times Photostory of this horrific event. We broke the story and felt the subsequent consequences…I remember arriving back home that night feeling sick, angry, and absolutely shattered, moreover feeling compassion with the press photographers who had the difficult task of documenting these horrible Xenophobic attacks that followed for weeks after.

The Devil Within

I like this photograph because it reminds me of me: when I watch the Tour de France. Especially towards the end, when the sprints begin, I become anxious and jump up and down like a lunatic devil.

Yes We Can

I really appreciated the photograph of Barrack Obama, with his feet relaxing on the table and showing his worn shoes. The image illustrates confidence, realism, and attitude: yes you can just put your feet up on the table and show the world that you’ve walked ten thousand steps today!

In conjunction with this image I also chose the following as a Top 2008 picture:

It was the day / night we all either stayed up throughout the night, or woke up at 3am to witness history in the making, the first black president of the United States of America.

Sucked dry – adios greenbacks, ciao ciao moola

What started off as a hint of a possible market collapse became a harsh reality worldwide. I find this picture great: the imagery of self-indulgence and capital greediness could not be more appropriate.

Powerful, beautiful nature

To end off this post (on a bit of a philosophical note) I thought it would be appropriate to show some nature/wildlife photographs. These are the pictures I find comforting and inspirational. They are pure, they are powerful, and they illustrate the essence of being:
