The fish market in Stone Town is quite overwhelming – the intense smell of fish strikes your nostrils and then the sight of gutted fish, huge chunks of Marlin, chopped up Sting Rays, Morray Eels, Squid, and other odd looking sea creatures fill your vision.
I was walking past each stall, hesitant to take photos, as permission is required and most people do not look like they want to be bothered by some sun burnt tourist wearing a bright polo shirt, a backpack, and a camera slung around the neck – and yes, clearly I should have known better to blend in…
Nevertheless, the atmosphere in the large market hall was lively, the sunlight was streaming through the archways (creating quite a bit of back light), and the sounds of chopping, wheeling and dealing filled the air. It was definitely a worthwhile Zanzibari experience!
More fish market pics to come….
