2009 was yet another year filled with events that amazed, saddened, and excited the world. I compiled a selection of the best Pictures Of The Year 2008 last year, and this year I’ll do the same, starting with the same tag line:

There are always a variety of photographs that highlight some of the events of the year for me. Some images are humorous, some completely superficial, whilst others are breathtaking, picturesque, serious, violent, and even terrifying.

The 2009 National Geographic’s International Photography Contest brought forward some fantastic images, this one in particular is my favourite!

Turffontein Racing Snails

Turffontein Racing Snails

Unlike those flimsy Forumla 1 cars that cannot handle a bit of rain (i.e. Malaysia), these Turffontein Racing Snails don’t just have the speed, but also the grip! :)

Port Elizabeth offers a wide variety of odd scenarios – this one was spotted by Justin.

I took this pic testing the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR DX – a stunning lens!

spank

This image and it’s accompanying story makes for an interesting yet sinful headline :P

I took the following picture during the South Africa vs. Australia Cricket Test Match in Johannesburg, South Africa.

During the lunch break, the pitch is open to the public, and the green arena becomes the playground for kids, parents, drunkards, and random dress-ups. Whilst walking back to my seat, a young couple came walking towards me, dressed up as a priest and what looked like a prostitute. They saw my camera and started posing, when suddenly the lady in the immoral prossy outfit asked if I’d like to see how the Pope spanks a Hooker. I agreed to this, lifted my viewfinder towards my right eye, and witness a holy spanking in the middle of Wanderers stadium!

mafia

I took this picture because I was intrigued by the subject matters – the combination of the young woman smiling and waving a Chinese fan, and the old, mafia-looking geezer chilling behind her…

However, after editing the pic, and uploading it to flickr, I noticed an odd looking chap in the pic – I swear the dude looks like Napoleon Dynamite!

I came across this mysterious Vintage Polaroid iPhone Photo, of what appears to be Elvis Presley and a Pimp. Any guesses who these two dodgy characters might be?

I loved the shape this woman’s dress made whilst she was crossing the road and the wind blowing it to the side – reminded me of a Flamenco dancer :)
