slavery1

I friend of mine just returned from Zanzibar, and we got talking about the beauty of the people, the place, the culture. Then she mentioned how saddened she was about the history of slavery, and how uncomfortable she felt when shown around the slave compound. Interesting enough I had the exact same somber feelings. The basement where hundreds of slaves were kept is just under a meter in height, terrible conditions for people to live under – and of course I have some pictures from my trip there to emphasize this short story.

These pictures where taken at the mangrove lagoon which is hidden inside Kwale island, off the coast of Zanzibar.

It felt like we entered an epic scene of a James Bond movie (a la Scaramanga’s Island in “The Man with the Golden Gun”). An unforgettable experience, the lagoon not the movie!
