When the iPhone was launched the hype associated with it was all about how it will revolutionise mobile consumption behaviour – and based on the recent study by M:Metrics this conjecture was spot on.

The study shows that the iPhone is the top device for news and information accessed on a mobile browser in the US. The below graph / table clearly illustrates that the iPhones’ insightful interface and technology makes for intuitive mobile browsing:

Mobile Content Consumption: iPhone, Smartphone: January 2008

Even though the iPhone itself is limited in terms of accessibility in many countries, this research highlights some important aspects:

  • Build a mobile device which is not only intuitive, but easy to use, and mobile consumption behaviour can change drastically.
  • Mobile consumption behaviour is highly erratic and should not be underestimated.
  • Mobile widgets (such as You Tube and Goolgle Maps) are an effective feature to drive mobile content consumption.
  • iPhone competitors need to step up and offer the same, if not better mobile browsing capabilities.

On a personal note, my mobile browsing habbits have only really awakend sice getting the iPhone. Before, I would use my Smartphone only a couple times a week, now I browse the net daily, much to the delight of my service provider!
