I remember the day when I joined the Sunday Times. I was shown around the building and was introduced to the staff. Most people’s names were familiar from reading the paper, but one person in particular left my hand shaking nervously. It was my first encounter with Greg Marinovich.

For those who are not familiar with the name:

Greg Marinovich is an award-winning South African photojournalist, film maker, photo editor, and member of the Bang-Bang Club. He co-authored the book The Bang-Bang Club, which details South Africa’s transition to democracy. (Wikipedia)

I read The Bang Bang Club a while back, and I followed, studied, and admired the styles of the likes of Marinovich, Nachtway, and Silva. So you can imagine how I felt meeting Greg for the first time and briefly working with him on a few projects and ideas.

Greg and Joao (Silva) gave a very insightful presentation and Q&A session at the FNB Joburg Art Fair last weekend – The Bang Bang Club has come into the spotlight again since the announcement that the book will be turned into movie – I’m looking forward to that!
