Context: The Anglican Cathedral’s altar stands on the location of the whipping post from the island’s largest slave market. There is a cross made from the tree beneath which Livingstone’s heart was buried, at Chitambo where he died. The Cathedral was built in 1873 by Edward Steere, Third Bishop of Zanzibar, reigned 1874 to 1882.

Whilst completing my studies in Grahamstown I found out that the city has close to 100 religious buildings. So I went on a mission to find them…

Some of the buildings resemble churches, some resemble homes, some basic run-down shacks…but all of them are places of worship.
