
I took this picture in the meat market in Stone Town – right then an there I wish I had a less intrusive camera – the place felt a little hostile and the smell of the dangling meat did not make me feel any more comfortable. I think that is the reason I like the picture as I find it depicts that tense atmosphere…

I joined MetadorTrips a few weeks ago, a really great online recourse and network for any traveler, and was shortly after contacted by one of their co-editors who saw some of my Zanzibar photographs on my blog. Metador claim to be “the world’s largest independent travel magazine” averaging ±720 000unique monthly visitors.
Needless to say I was very surprised and excited that they requested the best 15 pictures of my Zanzibar collection for a Photo Essay to be published on their site – and here it is:

While passing through a narrow corridor in Stone Town, Zanzibar, I spotted a couple of kids playing and laughing at the entrance of a building. One kid was hanging from the door, smiling mischievously into the camera. This is one of those pics shot whilst walking past an intriguing scene – it is a bit blurred around the edges, but the smile is definitively in focus!
